Research and Development Programmes
The 5 research and development programmes for ATMRI are as follows:-
Programme 1: Artificial Intelligence & Data Analytics for Air Traffic Management
The Objective of this programme is to design and develop a hybrid AI-Human Air Traffic Control (ATC) paradigm that can contribute to the next generation of air traffic management (ATM) systems.
This will be achieved through a suite of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and man-machine learning models that can augment human tasks in ATC such that air traffic control officers (ATCOs) could perform higher order cognitive tasks such as tactical air traffic flow management.
Research activities under this program are related to brain-computer interfaces, conflict detection and resolution, trajectory prediction, delay prediction, runway-taxiway management and airborne sequencing, under increasing demands and uncertainties.
This programme also aims to establish a deep learning platform and an intelligent flight data repository that can enable experimentation and development of Human-AI chat-bot system for ATM.
Programme 2: Urban Aerial Transport Traffic Management & Systems
The rapid, accelerating proliferation of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for commercial, public service, and leisure applications will continue in the coming years. However, since the available airspace is finite, there is a need to ensure that this limited resource is used efficiently and safely while reaping the maximum benefits as technology advances and applications diversify.
Traffic management of UAS is a critical enabler for UAS operations. Successful development and deployment of UAS traffic management will allow us to capture the greatest possible value and benefits from UAS applications as the industry innovates. Currently, there is a need to envisage the future operating environment of the airspace for diverse UAS applications, create and articulate the operating concepts, and facilitate the maturing of the technologies to create a positive ecosystem for UAS operations in Singapore.
Programme 3: Regional ATM Modernization
Pursuing the concept of Seamless ASEAN Sky
The rapid growth in air traffic demands ATM modernisation that will enhance capacity, efficiency and predictability whilst ensuring safe operations. The programme’s key goal is to develop operating concepts for the envisioned Seamless Sky as agreed in the ASEAN ATM Master Plan. The programme will also serve short and medium-term modernisation and harmonisation initiatives, making ATMRI the Regional Hub for ATM studies. The means to achieve the goal is via building up competencies in simulation and validation of ATM concepts. Highlights of the ATM concepts that will be investigated include Traffic Synchronisation, 4D Trajectory Management, Collaborative Decision Making, Real-Time interactive Demand-Capacity Balancing, A.I. based Conflict Management, SWIM and Traffic Situation Forecast. In the first two years, to achieve better focus in understanding and experimenting the concepts, the programme is organised into 3 projects: Traffic Synchronisation, Long Range Air Traffic Flow Management and CAAS Initiated Projects.
Programme 4: Exploratory Studies and Emergent Technologies
As technologies evolve very quickly in the areas of machine learning, intelligent systems, behavioral neuroscience, telecommunications, 3D virtual & augmented reality, data visualization, block chain, distributed storage and mobile computing, as well as in cyber-security, innovations for ATM that use these technologies are often opportunistic. The exploratory studies may involved development of new concepts, technologies and exploitation of new knowledge from other non-ATM techniques. The key areas of interest would be as follows: ATM Science, ATM Applied Research and Next-Generation Technologies.
Programme 5: Talent Development for ATM Research
The programme aims to become a cornerstone of world class PhD academic research, curricula and market oriented innovations that will significantly contribute to the landscape of ATM and air transportation in Singapore. On the platform, this forms the core infrastructure of ATMRI to nurture talents as well as to catalyse innovative ideas for future Singapore, ASEAN and beyond. This is a full-time doctoral programme and comprises two PhD scholarship tracks for potential PhD students who are interested to embark on research studies in ATM.
